About the year 1893, J.W. Pendleton organized and began leading a Sunday School which met in a hall room over a store. He had the hearty co-operation of the St. John's, Bakers, Baylors, and many other zealous Christian people. This was the beginning of Baptist activities in Chilhowie.
As the Sunday School grew and flourished, Rev. J.W. Hundley, a nearby pastor, gave added impetus to the work by preaching once a month at this meeting place. These combined activities led to the organization on September 28, 1901, of the Chilhowie Baptist Church with twelve charter members.
The small organization grew rapidly under the leadership of Rev. C.T. Taylor, who became the first pastor. A choice building lot was purchased from Mr. Clayburn Beattie, approximately one quarter mile west of our present building.
